- National and legal heritage: The Society is among the oldest in the world. It is one of Scotland's oldest surviving pre-1707 Union institutions and membership confers a special participation in Scotland's distinctive legal system.
- Architectural heritage: The magnificent Signet Library building is a jewel in Scotland's crown. Membership allows you to participate in the historic guardianship of one of the country's architectural masterpieces.
- Literary and cultural heritage: The Signet Library holds a large collection of non-legal books and materials, including the important Scottish Collection. Membership is a means of enjoying a social, literary and cultural life.
- Charitable involvement: The Society's office bearers and members hold office in many charitable trusts, and most notably the Society supports John Watson’s Trust which is focused on education for socially deprived young people.
