Professor Peter Butt will be in conversation with Philip Rodney WS, Chairman, Burness Paull on the subject of “Plain legal language: what we have learnt and where to next?”

Peter Butt is Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Sydney. He holds the degrees of BA, LLB, LLM and LLD. He is admitted as a lawyer in Australia, and is an honorary member of the Inner Temple (UK). Peter has written a book on legal drafting (Modern Legal Drafting) and edited a book on the same subject (Piesse’s Elements of Drafting). He is a co-editor of the Australian Legal Dictionary and the Concise Australian Legal Dictionary. He was the foundation director of the Centre for Plain Legal Language at the University of Sydney. Peter has lectured on plain language and legal drafting to lawyers in many countries, including Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, United States of America, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Each year he teaches a Master of Laws course in legal writing at the University of Cambridge.

Philip Rodney WS is chairman of the Burness Paull. He is a commercial litigator with more than 30 years' experience. His areas of specialisation are reputation management and product liability, where he acts for a number of global as well as national clients.

WS Commercial Contracts Conference 2015

The impact of recent case law on commercial contracts

In collaboration with the Hastie Stable, the WS Society will host a morning conference on Commercial Contracts on 5 March 2015, chaired by Michael Howlin QC. The conference will delve into the impact of recent decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Session, in the context of advising parties to Scottish commercial contracts. The focus will be the practical consequences of the fast evolving body of case law. The course is designed for commercial litigators, corporate and commercial solicitors in private practice and in-house counsel.
